OrbCord Inc engineers the strongest, lightest tethers ever flown — electrodynamic cords, momentum-exchange tethers, lunar elevator ribbons and satellite de-orbit systems. 147 missions. Zero failures.
Founded in 2008 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, OrbCord Inc (orbcordinc.com) started as a high-performance rope maker. Today we are the leading US manufacturer of orbital tether systems — ultra-light cords that generate power, de-orbit debris, and connect spacecraft.
Our 42,000 sq ft facility braids, coats and plasma-treats fibers that survive atomic oxygen, UV, micrometeorites and -180°C to +220°C swings. Every meter is X-ray inspected, proof-loaded and shipped with a digital twin.
Three core platforms. One goal: make orbit sustainable, powered and connected without propellant.
Bare-wire + braided cords cut Earth's magnetic field to generate up to 5kW or produce drag for de-orbit. No fuel. Just physics.
Redundant 4-line braided architecture survives 97% of debris cuts. Self-healing coating seals micrometeorite hits in seconds.
CNT-reinforced ribbons for lunar elevator prototypes, dust-tolerant, 63 GPa specific strength. Tested at 1/6g drop tower.
2km drag tether for 50-300kg sats. De-orbits in <5 years from 800km. Plug-and-play 1.8kg module.
5km conductive tether, 0.8–5kW continuous power + propulsion. For stations & tugs.
CNT ribbon spool, 10km, 63 GPa. For lunar elevators, Mars sample tethers, formation flight.
12.4 km OrbCord Hoytether deployed from Cygnus, towed inspector cam around ISS without thrusters. Tension control ±2%.
Two 180kg sats held 500m apart for 11 months using momentum-exchange cord. Saved $2.1M in fuel.
